One of my favorite ways to enjoy the fall with my family is by going outside! - Specifically, by hiking! The weather is cooler and there's often a nice breeze, which makes fall hiking much more preferable than summer hiking, and there's so much color and excitement in the air, it's truly magical!

Below, I'm sharing 5 hiking spots close to Denver that are great for families and great for seeing fall colors!

Hike # 1 - Roxborough State Park

Hike # 1 - Roxborough State Park

Roxborough State Park is a gorgeous place to hike any time of the year, but it has a lot of beautiful aspen trees right off the main trailhead/visitor's center, making it really easy to enjoy the fall colors even if you only get 100 steps into the hike before having to turn around. The fall leaves plus the red rocks make for a stunning view.

Important things to note: There is a $10 day pass fee per car, or you must have a Colorado State Parks pass. This location is popular and gets pretty busy weekends.

Hike # 2 - Waterton Canyon

Waterton Canyon is an easy, paved trail (stroller-friendly!) that runs along a beautiful creek. What makes this spot really fun is that mountain goats regularly cross the area, making it a fun place to see wildlife, too!

Important things to note: This location is very popular with bikers and hikers alike and gets pretty busy on weekends. Go early!

Hike # 3 - Chautauqua Park

Hike # 3 - Chautauqua Park

Chautauqua Park is located in Boulder, CO, and while it's a very popular (and busy) destination, it's also definitely worth the trouble because of the iconic mountain views and the gorgous tress all around. Parking can be a bit difficult, so be prepared for possible street parking.

Hike #4 - South Valley Park

South Valley Park is similar to Roxborough State Park, but without the fee, and not quite as big of a crowd. You get beautiful views of red rocks and rolling mountains, as well as a pretty pond view with colorful trees around it. What's great is you can park by the pond and just enjoy a picnic instead of making it a full on hike, if that's more your jam!

Hike #5 - Lair O' the Bear

Lair O' the Bear is unique because it allows for fall leaves AND a creek with a small shore to throw rocks into. The beginning of the creek access is very close to the main parking lot, and on a flat trail, making it a great spot to bring young children and older parents, alike!
